Day 1

Jeoldusan Martyrs' Shrine is a holy site of the Byeongin Persecution of 1866, where 177 Korean Catholics were brutally beheaded for their faith in 1866 and their bodies were thrown into the nearby river.

This site was built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Byeonin Persecution and to remember the spirit of martyrdom at Jeoldusan.

The Martyrs’ Museum and Memorial were built in 1967, and in 1972 Martyr’s park was opened to the public.

Pope John Paul II visited the site in 1984 and Mother Teresa paid her respects here in 1985. .

29 of these Catholics have been canonized as saints; these martyrs have been enshrined in the basement-crypt below the chapel. No one knows the name of one of them.
